An increase in body temperature, either as a result of exercise, travelling or high environmental temperature will cause the horse to sweat. The evaporation of this sweat helps the horse to cool down and regulate his body temperature.
Sweating causes fluid loss, together with the loss of body salts called electrolytes, contained in the sweat.
A horse in moderate work, trotting and cantering, can lose as much as 5-7 litres of fluid, and 50-70g electrolytes in an hour, and this will increase as the work intensity or duration increases, and even more if the weather is hot and humid!
The important electrolytes are:
Sodium and Chloride, Potassium, Calcium and Magnesium
Electrolytes play key roles in muscle contraction, the nervous system, and maintaining the fluid balance around cells, and very importantly, the concentration of sodium controls the horse’s thirst response. This is especially notable, as a significant loss of electrolytes can actually reduce the horse’s desire to drink, even when he has lost a large amount of fluid and is at risk of becoming dehydrated.
If the lost fluid and electrolytes are not replaced, the horse will begin to suffer from dehydration, affecting performance and resulting in symptoms of fatigue and reduced exercise tolerance, and ultimately more serious conditions affecting muscles and the ability to perform.
Because horse sweat contains a higher concentration of sodium and chloride than his other body fluids, it is important that electrolytes are provided at the correct concentrations to ensure that the desire to drink is maintained, so fluid balance AND electrolyte losses can be restored to promote recovery, and ensure continued optimum performance. This is especially important during longer show or events, when performance may decline if electrolyte and fluid balance are not restored.
Electrolyte replacement to restore losses and encourage water intake are important for all horses and ponies who sweat – from Pony Club ponies working hard at rallies in the Summer, through to globe-trotting International eventers, showjumpers and dressage horses!
Apple Lytes have been carefully formulated to replace the key electrolytes and encourage drinking to help prevent dehydration and maintain peak performance all season.
Apple Lytes are highly palatable, with an appetising cherry flavour, and should be introduced gradually at home, mixed in feed, building up to the recommended level when required after periods of sweating, with fresh water always available.

Delays or problems with delivery
For any reason there is a delay with your order we will contact you to notify you of the delay and give you a new delivery arrival date.
If there are any problems with your delivery, items missing or damaged, please get in touch with us immediately at sales@fearnsfarm.com. Please keep hold of all packaging, delivery note and invoices.

Returns
We do not offer free returns on any customer orders meaning any returns are at the customers expense(unless faulty or incorrect). We advise that the parcel returned is tracked or signed for as we cannot accept any liability for parcel/s going missing before they arrive to us.
Please allow up to 5 working days for your refund to be processed.
You can return any unused item for a refund within 30 days of the purchase date by filling in this form. Please ensure you fill the form in correctly as not doing so could delay the returns process.
Returned items must be a in a new unused condition with tags intact and original packaging. We will not handle used or dirty goods. Goods received after 30 days will not be eligible for a refund and a credit note will be raises for the value of your order. Use appropriate packing materials to parcel up your return and do not attach any labels directly to the item.
When shopping with us, your payments are completely safe. Our secure server encrypts all of your personal data, such as your name, address and credit card information. We will always use SagePay, the industry leader in secure internet transactions.
All of your transaction information is passed between our website and the SagePay Payment System, which is encrypted using 128-bit SSL technology. Cardholder information is ever stored or passed unencrypted, and never will be. All messages from SagePay are signed under MD5 hashing to prevent tampering. Nothing passed to SagePay will ever be used, examined of modified by any third party attempting to gain access to your sensitive information.
When your data reaches our SagePay system, all the sensitive information is secured using the same 256-bit encryption standards used by the likes of the US government; it is truly internationally recognised. The encryption keys are kept on tamper proof, state-of-the-art systems that are impossible to extract.
No individuals within SagePay or our company are able to decrypt cardholder data or transaction information. Only SagePay’s most senior staff are allowed access to the systems in extenuating circumstances such as a fraud case by the Police. Your card information is secure even from SagePay’s own employees because the system never displays full card numbers, even on the administration team’s screens.
Payments
